I was born in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States of America, to a first-generation Mexican-American father and a first-generation Italian-American mother. My father was a cartographer, so we moved a few times during my early life as his career progressed. My mother worked as a freelance document translator, writer, reporter, and homemaker. We lived in various states across the U.S. and in northern Mexico as my father’s mapping assignments demanded. Finally, after a short stay in the Panama Canal Zone for training and orientation upon his joining the Inter American Geodetic Survey, we settled in Caracas, Venezuela.
I grew up in Caracas and loved it. It was home. We learned to speak and write Spanish from the time we were very young. I was six years old. Though American English was my first language, I don’t remember not knowing Spanish. My father took us to many places in Venezuela he had visited during his field work. Every other year we would travel to the United States to visit family and friends on grand coastal road trips. We would drive from Washington, D.C., to Florida, to Texas, and back, typically starting at the international airports in New York City or Washington, D.C.
Thus began my love of travel, geography, nature, and culture—languages, art, music, history, cuisine, architecture, and agriculture.
Following a forty-six-year career as a software and systems engineer, project manager, instructor, consultant, and entrepreneur, I recently retired from full-time work. I now have the opportunity to pursue a different path—one that leads to new learning, new experiences, service to others, and who knows?
I live with my wife along the Colorado Rocky Mountain Front Range south of Denver. We have traveled extensively around the world but still have both far-flung and nearby places to visit.
As the adventure continues, I will document highlights in this weblog. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I have. Thank you for reading along,
CARLO
